The Wells, Maine area is rich with activities and attractions. Restaurants, shops, boat charters, and antiques dealers are close by. We’re also within easy driving distance to the coastal towns of Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Kittery, Portland, Freeport and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Drakes Island Beach
Located less than a mile from Cottage in the Lane, Drakes Island Beach is one of four beautiful sandy beaches in the town of Wells. While there are plenty of nearby beaches to choose from, Drakes Island is our favorite. Uncrowded, nothing commercial, just sand and surf. Drakes Island Beach is open to the public and restroom facilities are available in the parking area. Lifeguards are also on duty seven days a week from June through September.
Wells Harbor
The Town of Wells operates Wells Harbor, which includes a private marina, restaurant and the Wells Harbor Community Park. A boat launch is available to the public and a small sandy beach provides water access for smaller vessels like kayaks and paddleboards. The Wells Harbor Community Park features a gazebo and pavilion, playground, accessible observation deck, and bocce ball and horseshoe courts. Free summer concerts are held every Saturday at 6:30pm from July to Labor Day.

Wells Reserve at Laudholm
Located a half-mile from Route 1 in Wells, the Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a National Estuarine Research Reserve focused on education, conservation and research. Easy to moderate trails are open year round for hiking, allowing visitors to explore fields, woodlands, and wetlands. Guided tours are available to visitors of all ages and experience levels. Hands-on day camps, story hours, and Discovery Tours are also available for children and families. Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge protects valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds. The refuge spans 50 miles of coastline in York and Cumberland counties and will contain 14,600 acres when land acquisition is complete. The refuge entrance is located off Route 9 in Wells. The refuge provides visitors a wide variety of activities including hunting, fishing, shellfishing, wildlife viewing, and canoe and kayak sites.
